There were two sparrows who were sisters and who lived together. Their parents had made a nest for them to see whether they would be able to live together in peace. The elder sparrow had learnt to cook. She therefore said to her sister, ''Go and fetch some rice for our dish today, while I prepare the rest of the meal.'' The little sparrow happily flew off and returned with the rice. The elder sparrow then put the pot on and it was not long afterwards that the aroma of the food started to come from the pot. The aroma gave the elder sparrow the evil intention of eating all the food by herself without giving any to the little sparrow. Since she could not tell this to her sister, she said to her, ''I think we need more salt. Please go and fetch some.'' As soon as the little sparrow flew away, thinking that the two will soon be enjoying the meal together, the elder sparrow quickly ate up everything. She then put some sand in the pot, covered it and went to sleep. When the little sparrow returned, she was surprised to see that the pot was cold and filled with sand. ''Dear sister,'' she said, ''Where is the food and what happened to you.'' The elder sparrow only said, ''My eyes are aching. Leave me alone to sleep.'' The little sparrow knew that her sister often got up to mischief and often troubled her even while their parents were there. To make sure that her sister has eaten the food, she flew off to a river and carried some water in her claws and beak. She then sprinkled this on her sleeping sister, who naturally opened her beak to drink the water. From above, the little sparrow clearly saw the food in her mouth and knew that she was right. She then went to complain to her parents, who scolded the elder sparrow. They gave the little sparrow some of their food and sent the elder sparrow off that night without that night without supper. The elder sparrow begged her sister and parents for forgiveness and regretted what she had done, they all then lives happily together.
