Rank 9 Out of 10
I always wanted to touch the sky
To be close to the area where the birds fly
And to play with the flakes of snow
So no bounds did my joy know
To ‘Gangtok’ when our trip was planned
And now it is Tibetology’s newfound land
On my little brother’s face was a remarkable glow
About the hilly people he too was curious to know
Do the inhabitants ever get worn out, tired or low?
Trekking the hills or going down the valleys below……
Merrily on the way, singing a few songs
Beside the energized River ‘Teesta’ we drove along
Watching the mountains covered with snow caps
Comfortably I sat in my mom’s lap
After sometime I slept, holding her hand
And on opening eyes, found myself in a different land
The panoramic city was surrounded by hillocks
Easily I guessed it was picturesque ‘Gangtok’.
The next day we began towards “Baba Harbhajan Singh’s” shrine
Where one could feel his presence divine
Crystal clear water of ‘Tsongmo Lake’ caught my eye
Yak riding was an unmatchable fun to try
Redstarts and fork tails were the migratory birds there
Not just a picnic, you see, we were becoming more aware
Towards ‘Nathula Pass’ we gained height bit by bit
And drove on with a strong resolve of not to quit
‘Kanchenjunga’ offered such a beautiful landscape and sight
The mountain stood triumphant with all its might
The vehicle moved upwards with a controlled force
And in the process I felt like a bird that gradually soars
Finally we reached the frozen ground, with snow crust on
Covered with woollens from head to toe, we played upon
Comparatively low was oxygen on that high altitude
Yet the wintry delight filled our heart with gratitude
Also saw the local people carrying water to fulfil their needs
Surely this was a glimpse into their determined deeds
At ‘Ganesh Tok’ temple my fancy was caught by the ethnic wear
In ‘Lepcha’ dress I too looked pretty and dear
On the hill top was a chilly breeze
Smiling into the camera I said “cheese”
At ‘Barkthang’, pure elixir flowed from the mountain
So safe was this waterfall, I went near again and again
‘Rumtek’ and other monasteries are the learning centers where Lamas dwell
Instantly I was drawn to the butter lamps with their characteristic smell
Outside the ‘Do Drul Chorten  Stupa’ the sky had a blissful company
Of the Sun, spread in a crimson harmony
At ‘Timi-Tarku’ were lush green sprawling gardens of tea
And to ‘Orchid Flower Show’ people were invited with a humble plea
‘Chaar Dham’ and many other attractions in the vicinity
The people in Gangtok have an innate simplicity
The city exemplifies a clean and litter free zone
Diverse culture of the populace adds an exciting tone
Not just nature’s repose or the charming serenity
But equally appealing was the warm hospitality.
