Childhood and adolescence are usually the happiest and most careless periods in our lives, but there always comes the time when a young person starts asking questions “What am I going to do in my life?”, “How can I be successful in my future?” Many young people understand the importance of proper education for their future and think of going to a college after graduating from high school.
High school and college are similar in many ways. For example, you can choose the subjects you are interested in and would like to study; both establishments demand a lot of time and effort if you want to be successful in them; you have different types of classes: lectures, workshops; in both establishments you can be under the influence of your class/group mates, teachers and parents or even experience strong peer pressure.
There are many more ways, though, in which high school and college are very different. School is mandatory and free of charge. There are a lot of people (your parents, school counsellors, different social organizations, etc.) who help you study at high school even if you are not very motivated.
It’s completely different with colleges – they are not mandatory and usually very expensive (unless you have got a scholarship) and you are the one who takes all the responsibility for your own study. School students usually live with their parents or guardians and to a great extent depend on them financially and physically. College students live on their own – in a dormitory on the campus or in a rented apartment and have to solve all everyday problems themselves. All these problems do not leave much time to waste, so a college student must be much more careful about ways of spending his/her time than a school student.
At college you also have more freedom when choosing your own curriculum and pace of study, while in high school you do not have such a freedom. Nowadays many school students prefer having a job if they want to make extra pocket money, though going to work is not vitally important for them. It’s different for a college student, who in most cases has to work hard to be able to support himself.
We can get a conclusion that both are having positive and negative features to see.
