Medina the city of our Holy Prophet is the city in the Hejaz region of Western Saudi Arabia and serves as the capital of AL-Medina province. It is the second holiest city in Islam and the burial place of Islamic Prophet Muhammad. Medina is historically significant for being Muhammad's home after the Hijra. Before the advent of Islam the city was known as Yathrib but was personally renamed by Prophet Muhammad. Medina is home to the three oldest cities in Islam namely Masjid-e-Nabawi, Quba mosque, Masjid-e-Qiblatain. Medina’s importance as a religious site derives from the presence of Masjid-e-Nabawi or the Mosque of the prophet. The tomb of prophet Muhammad later became the part of the Mosque when it was expanded by the Umayyad caliph AL-Walid. Mount Uhud is a mountain north of Medina which was the site of second battle between Muslims and Meccan forces. In the ten years following the Hijra Medina formed the base from which Muhammad attacked and was attacked, and it was here that he marched on Mecca becoming its ruler without any battle. Even when Islamic rule was established, Medina remained for some years the most important city in Islam and the capital of the caliphate.
