"Did the police check John's pockets?" Asked Stephen.
"Yes and surprisingly, there was no money in his pockets or wallet!" said James.
"Who is incharge of this case?"
"At my house."
"He's in the custody of the police."
"Can I meet the inspector?"
"Sure. If you will excuse me, I've to go to the hospital to attend some patients. “said Dr. James. And with this James Finn left the room. Chris Stephen rested for half an hour and then wore his deer-stalker hat and drove toward Kent in a cab. When he arrived at the house of Dr. James, he saw Inspector Morton at the door.
"Inspector!" said Stephen.
"Mr. Chris Stephen! How nice to meet you." said Morton.
"How's your case going? I heard that you've arrested Mr. Martin Hopkins as your suspect." said Stephen.
"Yes Mr. Stephen. We're going to finish this case as we've a solid evidence that Martin Hopkins is the murderer."
"Can you tell me?" asked Stephen.
"Yes, when we arrested Martin, we saw that the shoe prints matched exactly to shoe Martin was wearing." said Morton.
"Hmm...It sure is strong." said Stephen.
"Many people will murder their best friend for a million pounds."
"What are you going to do?"
"Oh, give me one day, I'll think about this case." said Stephen.
"Ok, but the trial of Martin will take place in 3 days." said Morton.
"Can I meet Martin today?"
"Oh....ok." said Morton
"Thank you." said Stephen.
Chris Stephen rode towards Kent Prison with Inspector Morton. Morton showed Martin's cell. Martin was a poor, old, thin and weak man, nearly 60 years of age. Stephen looked at him for a moment and said," Can you bring him out of the cell?"
"What! He'll run away!" cried Morton.
"No, I'll hold him firmly." said Stephen.
"Ok....but what will you do with him?" asked Morton.
"Ah....that I can't tell you." said Stephen.
"Oh, very well then." said Morton. The inspector let out Martin and left him with Stephen. Stephen took him to the top of the stairs and said," Martin, I want you to run down the stairs and reach your cell."
"As you wish, sir." said Martin. Martin started to run down but he was limping so much that he could only walk slowly. Stephen showed him a pistol and yelled," Can't you run!?"
"That's the most I can do sir. I've problem in my legs." said Martin.
"Oh, sorry. You may return to your cell."
After a few minutes Dr. James Finn came to the prison. He greeted Stephen. When they were coming out of the prison, Stephen knocked down a watering can, wetting everyone's shoes, Stephen quickly bent down and picked up the can and placed it on top of the of a window sill.
Chris Stephen then went to his flats and retired to his rooms. Throughout the day he lay curled on his sofa thinking about the case. He was again and again deducing the facts. In the morning he rushed to Kent Prison. There he met Morton and James Finn and said," I've found the man."
