“I told you they will be really high,” I said while looking at the mountain which disappeared in the clouds.
We were about to enter a city called Abottabad which is located in Pakistan. We could feel the cool breeze which was getting cooler as we went uphill on our van. We found lots of mountains as we got closer to the city—they were increasing in size as well as in quantity.
It was evening with some cauliflower type clouds. The temperature was cool even during summer time. The mountains were usually rocky from the bottom and ended up with lush greenery at the top. After living in Saudi Arabia, the scenery of the mountains and the clouds looked beautiful.
“Should we climb that mountain over there?” my father said, pointing to a mountain which looked high to me.
I was always scared of heights and that mountain was high enough for me. So I thought that I shouldn’t climb that mountain and kept quiet. But after a moment my cousins and my siblings all agreed to climb that mountain and I still remained quiet. Then I thought that it will be a little embarrassing for me if people younger than me climb that mountain and I don’t.
“Okay, I think that mountain is good enough,” I finally told my father.
At night we reached Abottabad and my father called my uncle to ask the address of his house. When my father understood the address, he realized that he just crossed his house some minutes ago!
We rested at our uncle’s house after a long drive and decided to climb that mountain the next day. Everyone woke up early with the loud thunder and the shuttering of windows caused by strong winds. A loud noise and a blinding flash came out of nowhere!
“I think lightning struck the ground near us!” my cousin exclaimed, scared by the thunderstorm.
“Relax, lighting and thunder are pretty common because of the high mountains,” my uncle told us.
Our plan was delayed because of the storm, but the storm didn’t last for so long that we had to cancel our trip. My mother and my aunt prepared breakfast and packed lunch for our trip. After breakfast, we headed to our destination. The day was cloudy with intermittent drizzle, my favourite weather after living in Saudi Arabia for 9 months.
When we arrived, I was stunned to see that mountain again from a closer distance—it was so high and steep!
“From where are we going to start?” I asked my uncle, who was skilled at climbing mountains.
“Well, I think we should start it from there,” he pointed to an area where the dirt was visible and continued. “Be careful, the grass is slippery when it’s wet so watch your steps really carefully. Another thing I want to mention is never look down, or else you might lose your balance. If you think you are stuck, go back to where you were previously, and search for another place to climb.”
Everyone began to climb. My uncle was the first one and I was behind him. I watched every single step of my uncle and placed my foot right where he did. I was better than my cousins at hiking but the only thing which was not good was that I was scared of heights. Once, we reached a place which was very steep so it was really hard to climb. My uncle, one of my cousins and I were the only ones who climbed that area. The rest of them chose a different way which was a longer way but was easier to climb.
“We are almost done,” my cousin said in excitement.
“Yeah, be careful, the grass there looks wet and will sure be slippery,” I warned him.
Soon, my uncle reached the summit, and then it was my father along with me and my cousin, reaching the summit at third place. After 10 minutes, everyone was standing on the summit. The top of the mountain was flat, making it a perfect place for everyone since they all can easily stand. The city not only looked beautiful, but scary as well. It took us about 25 minutes to climb this mountain.
When I looked at the bottom of the mountain, I wondered how I climbed this mountain all the way up. It looked really hard to climb that mountain when I looked at the steepness from the top view.
This was the first time I had ever climbed a mountain which was quite elevated. It was also a dangerous adventure because if someone slipped, he might have gotten a serious injury. This was the most memorable trip to Abottabad because when I was climbing, I really loved that many of my cousins got together and climbed that mountain and—the weather at that time was just lovely! So these conditions made this a memorable trip for me.
Have you actually went to Abbotabad? Its my most favorite place in the whole universe! I live in Gujranwala, I am from Lahore, but I was born in Abbotabad, and my Dadi lives there, my Nani is her neighbor, and best of all, my cousins and me are allowed to hike all alone!
