One of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Taj Mahal was built by Emperor Shah Jahan in the memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. She died in 1631. Her tomb is inside. The Taj Mahal, constructed of pure white marble, entirely represents Mughal architecture.
The construction of Taj Mahal (located in Agra, India)was started in 1632, a year after the death of Shah Jahan's young wife. It is believed that the chief architect was Ustad Ahmed Lahawari. More than 20,000 workers were employed from different parts of the world to build this masterpiece. It took 22 years to build the 0.169 sq cm Taj Mahal. This building is decorated with beautiful carvings, colourful stones and Quranic inscriptions. Various coloured marbles and gemstones were also used for enhancement. The architects used several methods such as carving, stucco, painting and mosaic to beautify this great monument. Glazed tiles were used for exterior decorations and glass painting was used to beautify the interior. The construction of Taj Mahal costs 4 to 5 million rupees.
