It is the morning of 15th November, 2013. I have come to my parent’s home in a northern suburb of Lahore to spend the day. By Lahore’s standards, it’s a beautiful weather, with winter just arriving. After the impossibly long and merciless summer, Lahoris are relieved at the change of the season. And it’s only mildly cold at present which makes it the ideal weather by local standards. My daughters are playing in the veranda at the back.
I am sitting in the drawing room with my father. Of late, I have come to cherish my conversations with him for a number of reasons. One, we really did not talk a lot when I was growing up and indeed the entire 24 years of my life before marriage. He has been, by nature, not very talkative and used to be even more reserved with his children than with other people. With patients (He’s a family physician), he was very lively so they used to admire his sense of humor and narrated incidents to us about what ‘doctor sahib’ the other day. At home, as a father, although he did joke and shared light moments, he never used to sit and have conversations with us. That has changed.
In recent years, the past two or more years especially, when the situation is right, he talks about the past, his childhood, his college days, his trips abroad and his friends, old memories basically that have assumed a special significance for him. (That’s a pattern common to the elderly in general, I think but I wonder if it’s more characteristic of persons with neurodegenerative disorders like Parkinson’s)

Ayesha WOW! Just... WOW! Your mom's story is really great. I can't put it in words. I think more moms should collaborate their work in their children's accounts , you know, to encourage them! Ayesha
