I am here to inform you about the way hurricanes are named. You hear reports about hurricanes very often but have you ever wondered about how they are named. Until 1953 a U.S company named U.S hurricane centre was responsible for naming these powerful storms. Today hurricanes are named by a specialized agency in the United Nation called world meteorological organization. The history of hurricanes is very fascinating the way they are named still fascinates people today.
Long ago the hurricanes in many countries such as West Indies were named by Christian saints. In the Christian calendar each saint has a special day for themselves for example in the Christian calendar November 27 is St. Patrick’s Day. So if a hurricane was to happen in a place like West Indies on November 27 the hurricane would be named hurricane Patrick, but the same names were being used many times and there were no women names for hurricanes, so in the late 1900’s people realized that women also had to be included. But then the company decided for a few years’ only to use women names to name hurricanes. Finally in 1978 people realized that both men and women could be used to name hurricanes. The organization also declared new rules about naming hurricanes.
Rule# 1:  All hurricanes will be named alphabetically using all letters except Q, U, X, Y and Z because no common names start with those letters
Rule# 2: Each region will get a list of 21 hurricane names at the start of six years starting from A and if all 21 names are used in the six years Greek letters are used.
Rule #3: After six years the list of names will be recycled and a new list will be created
Due to the sake of generosity the company retired some names such as Wilma, Katrina or Dan. Retired means that the names will never be used to name another hurricane, this happens because in hurricane Dan, Wilma or Katrina a very large amount of people died and so that people would not be reminded of their loved ones.
In my opinion I think naming hurricanes is a good idea, I know this because when you name a hurricane you can remember when the hurricane took place and where.
