Umar ibn al-khatab was born 13 years after the birth of the Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him), into the Adi family of the Quraysh tribe. He was well known for his strength and bravery. He was one of the few people in Makkah who knew how to read and write. Like most Quraysh, he was a trader.
When the Quraysh leaders plotted to kill Mohammad (peace be upon him) Umar immediately volunteered. On his way to kill the Prophet (peace be upon him), Umar found out that his sister, Fatima, had accepted Islam. So Umar decided to kill her first. When he reached her house, he heard Fatima reciting the Quran. He entered the house and demanded to see what she was reading. When Umar read the Quran, he declared that only God could have revealed it. He immediately went to Muhammad (peace be upon him) and accepted Islam.
