An anvil is a basic tool. In the simplest terms it is a block with a hard surface on which another object is struck. In the past anvils were first made of stone as a stone tool, then bronze, and later wrought iron. As steel became more readily available, anvils were faced with it. There are many references to anvils in ancient Greek and Egyptian writings.
