Greenland

Greenland is a huge country covered with snow and ice. In about 982 a Norseman, Eric the Red, discovered Greenland. He wanted to encourage people to settle there so he called it Greenland to make it sound attractive. It is a very early example of deliberately misleading labelling! There, both in the East and the West, they found human habitations and fragments of skin boats and stone implements, from which it was evident that the same kind of people had been there as lived in Wineland and whom the Greenlanders call Skraelinjagr.
