Archimedes’s Screw

 
   
 
Around 2,200 years ago, the Greek mathematician Archimedes invented a device for drawing up water from rivers to irrigate the land. Now called Archimedes screw, the machine consisted of a cylinder containing a giant screw. Rotating the handle turns the screw and draws water upwards.
