Make a Siphon Category: Science
Dated: 2011-08-05
Siphons have many uses in science and industry and they are often used in the home for emptying tropical fish tanks. The siphon’s gentle sucking action removes the water without disturbing gravel, snails and water weeds.

Steps to be taken

1.    Place both bottles on a level surface. Fill one bottle three-quarters full of water. Place the plastic tube in the filled bottle and suck water up the tube until is filled.
2.    Raise the bottle above eye level, stop sucking and immediately clamp your thumb firmly over the end of the tube to prevent water flowing out. Place the end of the tube in the empty bottle.
3.    When you take your finger away you will see water flows up the tube, from the upper to the lower bottle. Water pressure drives it down the tube.
